Scripts for Indie Game-making contest 2014

Some devs have expressed interest in using my scripts for their submissions for the contest, but are unclear whether they are allowed to use them due to the “free for non-commercial use” clause that I’ve included in the terms of use.

For those that are not aware of this contest, you can check it out by clicking on the banner:

My scripts are free for use for development purposes. This basically means you can try them out as much as you want, study them, or you can use them to make your game. If you want to share your game for free that should also be fine.

It should be clear that if you want to sell your game, you’ll need a commercial license. But what about contests?

For the most part, I require a license to use my scripts for the contest. What you’re buying are tools that enable you to build your game or enhance your game, without having to spend the time and effort to do it yourself, time that could be spent on further development.

For the purposes of the contest, a license can be granted to use any script released under my name, so this doesn’t include scripts written by others that rely on my scripts. The license can be purchased for $20.

As usual, the scripts are free for development purposes, so you can try them out as much as you want and build your game with them, but if you would like permission to use it for the contest (as a submission), a license would be required.

Is it $20 per script? Or is the $20 a full purpose license for all of your scripts as a whole? And if not as a whole, What would that kind of cost be for current and future scripts?

This information is based on previous licensing model. Currently I offer my publicly released scripts for free.

Damn. I had no idea of this contest. Oh well. Maybe there will be another, sooner rather than later. 😉

More to the point though. Have you decided on how you will handle actual commercial uses? Or is it strictly a case by case analysis? I have entertained the idea of doing something commercial… Eventually.

Currently doing it case-by-case, so I can determine whether the person really needs the script or not before they pay for licensing.
